Between 1880 and 1930, knob & tube wiring, also known as K&T, was used extensively in residential building applications. It consists of single copper wires that run in walls and ceilings, passing through joist and stud holes by a means of a protective porcelain insulating tube and secured in long runs with porcelain insulators. Knob & tube became obsolete due to its high price tag in comparison to running an all-encompassing cable.

Is knob & tube wiring dangerous?
Knob & Tube wiring is not inherently dangerous as an installation. Where we experience the danger is in the following areas:
Due to its age, the insulation is typically brittle, broken, cracked and/or missing.
The system is typically added to over the years with dangerous wiring methods (a mix of old and new wire).
There is no ground. Thus, you cannot plug in any 3-prong cords.
It is often modified by do-it yourselfers, or unqualified technicians, resulting in poor connections.
It is often overlooked. K&T is designed to dissipate heat by being in free-air. It is often covered in insulation over the years, putting homes with it at risk of a fire.
